Today, there are so many styles of writing. From an academic essay to a book review to a dissertation chapter, these various types of writing are each written in different ways. What this means is that the way you go about writing these various types of work is always different and you cannot approach a book review like a dissertation chapter or write an essay like it is a lab report.
That is why it is common for writing to be grouped into different categories, based on the writing style. The writing style contains elements that are used for certain types of writing alone.
There Are Four Main Styles Of Writing:
Expository writing brings to the reader’s mind something they have not heard before or they are not used to hearing. It treats subject matter from an angle where it tries to bring to awareness things not known before. As a result, expository writings rely heavily on facts and are based on real-life experiences.
Using an expository style, a writer is able to explain a matter, especially one the target audience is not very familiar with. Since there is a heavy reliance on facts, the writer is not subjective, as they would rather use facts that support their point of view, than voice their own opinion.
This style of writing is very popular in the academic field, where writers are expected to bring something to public awareness together with proof and facts. It is also used by those in advanced fields when they try to introduce something to the public consciousness.
You can find this style of writing used in textbooks, scientific and technical writing, theses, and news articles.
Like the name states, the descriptive style is used to describe events, people, things or situations to an audience that would make them feel like they had the first-hand experience with what you are talking about. It involves going into great detail and breaking things down to make it relatable to people. Descriptive writing relies on imagery as the writer tries to appeal to the 5 sense organs of the readers, allowing them to imagine what he has seen.
This style of writing is usually featured in works of fiction, such as a novel or a storybook. The author is trying to describe or create a picture in your mind so that you can flow with the story. Nonfiction works too could also involve descriptive writing, when the writer is trying to describe a first-hand experience, such as when they traveled to some part of the world or had a nasty experience with some animals.
The main aim of descriptive writing is for the readers to understand what the author or writer has experienced or seen or heard. It does not matter whether they believe the writer or not, as long as they get an idea of what he is trying to say.
Novels and journals are some of the popular places where you can see descriptive writing at work.
This style of writing requires the writer to convince the reader of a particular thing. The writer expresses his opinions and thoughts intending to try to get the reader to share the same sentiments at the end of the day. Its reliance on facts is as far as they support the writer’s point of view.
People use persuasive writing when they are trying to convince people of an idea, movement, or to gain sympathy. That is why the writer expresses his own opinions rather than facts to get your support, understanding, or sympathy. This style is also featured in academics, particularly the arts, where people are always supporting a particular point of view or creating their own.
Persuasive writing also includes personal speeches, academic essays, book and movie reviews, business proposals, letters of complaint, and so on.
4. Narrative Style
This involves telling a story. A writer picks this style when they want to tell you about something that happened, either personally or otherwise. This style is usually orderly and contains a beginning, middle, and ending so that the story or event described makes sense to people.
Narrative writing is so engaging, as they contain elements like conflict and settlement, dialogue, and action to make the story more interesting to people. The event described may be fictional or nonfictional as the narrative style is also used in biographies and historical accounts.
The style of writing you use affects how the work is perceived by your readers. Using the right style puts you in order and tells people you know what you are doing.
